Article: Rain on the Barn Roof
Rain on the Barn Roof
Notes from the Barn Office: Sane Sunday ~ Rain on the Barn Roof
My Sunday friluftsliv was a total washout.
No bonfire.
No outside relaxing in the quiet.
No nothing.
But I decided to use that… and get out anyway.
For me.
For maintaining my gift to mySELF.
So I took my big mug of hot spiced apple tea out to the barn, pulled up my Adirondack chair, and just listened to the rain.
Just taking five minutes.
Pretending it was raining so hard I’d get drenched if I ran back to the house… so I might as well stay put.
My Dad and I used to do that when I was little—just stay in the barn while it rained and enjoy it.
And I had forgotten how special that sound is: rain on a barn roof. Quiet and methodical. Its own steady rhythm. Sacred, in a way.
The funny thing is, it never stays five minutes.
Neither did I.
These Sane Sundays have gone from “just a few minutes” to thirty minutes… and sometimes several hours. Not because I’m being productive. Not because I’m getting ahead.
Because I’m finally letting myself ‘be’.
Who knew taking time out for myself would feel this transformational? Not the big plans. Not the perfect setup. Just showing up anyway—especially when everything is wet and flooded, inconvenient and soggy. Even the dogs. Soggy dawgs.
Today, the rain became ‘the bonfire’.
Same deep exhale.
Same release in the shoulders.
Different soundtrack.
This one was for you, Dad.
Traditions Honored. Entertaining Refined. Moments Celebrated.
