The Weekly Friluftsliv — A Sunday Reset & Recharge
This morning I didn’t start with a list.
It’s raining here in the upper Midwest—the kind of steady rain that cools everything down and makes the barn feel like its own small world. I sat quietly with a cup of coffee and listened. Not to the phone. Not to the news. Not to the next obligation.
Just the sounds we don’t realize we miss until we get them back.
Horses munching hay in their stalls. That slow, steady rhythm. The soft snort as they blow hay from their noses. Sparrows up in the rafters, chirping and carrying on like they’ve got nowhere else to be. The sound of rain on the barn roof.
No hustle. No bustle. No pressure to 'do' anything.
Just quiet.
For a long time I lived in a kind of survival mode—taking care of everyone else first. An elder widowed parent. Aging show dogs, show horses and broodmares. The day-to-day responsibility that keeps life running. Necessary, good work… but it can quietly teach you to forget yourself.
And I did.
So I’m doing something simple now: I’m claiming one day a week—Sunday—as my reset. Sometimes it’s a full day. Sometimes it’s an hour. Sometimes it’s just ten minutes with coffee and rain and the sound of horses eating. But it is mine. It is deliberate. And it is not negotiable.
In Sweden there’s a word for this: friluftsliv—open-air life. Not competitive. Not performative. Just the steady, restoring act of being outside and letting the nervous system settle.
That’s what this is for me. A small exhale that makes the rest of the week lighter.
And if you’ve been carrying a lot—if you’ve been strong for everyone else and quietly tired in a way you can’t quite explain—you’re cordially invited to join me. Take your own Sunday reset. A few minutes. An hour. A few hours. A day.
Let’s make it our tradition.
If you’re here, you likely already understand: we don’t do this world because it’s easy. We do it because it’s special.
Traditions Honored. Entertaining Refined. Moments Celebrated.
